September 10th: St. George’s Caye Day

Due to Mayan resistance, Spanish colonists were unable to settle the area known today as Belize. Around the mid-1600’s, British pirates settled along the coast as a springboard[1] to attack Spanish ships. In the 1700’s, the settlers began cutting logwood, useful for dying wool[2]. The Spanish tolerated their presence as long as they gave up pirating. Although occupied by British settlers, Spain considered the territory hers. After escalating tensions between the two countries, Spain was determined to take sole possession of Belize. On September 10th, 1798, a Spanish fleet[3] was defeated by a much inferior British fleet in St. George’s Caye. As a result, Spain gave up its claim[4] on the Belizean territory. Every year, the country celebrates this day, which is also known as National Day.
