Most people are familiar with the American Thanksgiving. Several Thanksgiving ceremonies had been celebrated by both English and French explorers and settlers who had survived the long journey to what would eventually become Canada as early as 1578. After the American Revolution, Loyalists (colonists loyal to the British crown) fled to Canada and brought the customs of the American Thanksgiving with them. From 1879 on, Thanksgiving Day was held every year on different dates until 1957, when it was officially established on the second Monday in October, allowing Canadians to have a three-day weekend. Like their neighbor to the south, Thanksgiving is a time to spend with the family, eat large dinners and hold parades.
