Some people think that our lives are a question of chance; life is like a deck of cards[1], the future is written in the cards, and everything depends on the luck of the draw[2]. It’s out of your control.
Sometimes, you might be out of luck, when things go the opposite way of what you were hoping. You might react by saying, “No such luck!” Or you may lament, “Just my luck!” When a string[3] of bad events happen to you, then you’re said to be down on your luck.
Other times, you have to try your luck; try to do something although it may not succeed. Perhaps, you’ll be in luck, when something good happens that you weren’t expecting! This can be referred to as a stroke of luck. If you somehow find yourself in a very good situation, then you have definitely lucked out. And if you’re extremely lucky, then you can be said to have the luck of the devil.
But don’t push your luck! Just because good things have happened in the past, you can’t always expect them to continue that way. If you do you might push your luck. Or if you risk[4] losing what you have achieved so far because you are trying too hard, then you’re even more likely to push your luck, and end up[5] losing it.
Let’s end with a few saying about luck to meditate over:
- Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more you sweat, the luckier you get.
- The more you know, the luckier you get.
- Good luck is a lazy man's estimate of a worker's success.
- We attribute good luck to our smartness; Bad luck is blamed on the gods.
- There is no one luckier than he who thinks himself so.
- A person is unlucky who falls on his back and breaks his nose.
