March Madness

In the U.S., college sports are very popular, especially American football and basketball. There’s more likely to be a university near fans than a professional sports team, so they have more regional importance. Also many people feel that college sports are not tainted[1] by money like in professional sports. Fans also like to see how an amateur college player develops into a professional one. Because college sports are very popular, colleges make a lot of money from sports games, from ticket sales to TV rights to merchandising[2]. So colleges also make a strong effort to recruit[3] high school students from around the country to their sports programs.

During the month of March, there is a major basketball tournament called March Madness. It’s called Madness[4] because the 32 best college basketball teams from all over the country play each other. Like in tennis tournaments, the teams are seeded[5], or ranked[6], so that the best teams play the worst ones. Only one game is played in each round. The loser is automatically eliminated, and only the winner advances to the next round. This year, the first round started on March 19th and will end with the Finals on April 5th.
