Possessive adjectives are confusing. First let's look at the table of subject pronouns and their respective possessive adjectives.

Examples:
he his
she her
it its
we our
they their
Examples:
Adam's apple = his apples (the apple belongs[1] to Adam)
Adam's apples = his apples (the apples belong to Adam)
the children's ball = their ball (the ball belongs to the children)
The most important thing to keep in mind is that the possessive adjective does NOT depend on the noun that follows it, the possessed[2] BUT on the noun it blongs to, the possessor[3].
And remember that possessive adjectives, like all adjectives, are NEVER plural.
