To Be or Not To Be, or To Have and Have Not

Shakespeare or Hemingway? Choose carefully! In English, we use be where you use have, and you use have where we use be. Confusing, isn’t it?! We use a different verb to say the same thing. For example, you would say, “I have 28 years.” When you should say, “I am 25 years old.” Or you might say, “I have hunger.” When you should say, “I am hungry.”

Basically, we use be with adjectives, because we use adjectives to describe who or how we are,  while we use have with nouns, because nouns are objects that we can possess.

Now let’s take a look at some things that go together with be. As we mentioned above, we use be with age. You can be young or you can be old. And you can be hungry[1] or be thirsty[2]. Sometimes, you might be jealous[3] of other people. Depending on the weather, you could be hot[4] or you could be cold[5]. If you are lucky[6], you won’t become sick.

Speaking of sick, do not to confuse being cold and having a cold[7]! If either is the case, then you have bad luck[8]. Likewise, don’t confuse being a profession, for example you are a student, and having a job, as a teacher for example.

You might be surprised by all the things you have in your daily life. After you wake up in the morning, you have a shower[9]. Then you have breakfast[10], you might have coffee and toast[11]. In the afternoon, you have a quick lunch[12], you just have a sandwich. After work, you decide to have a haircut[13], and then you meet your friends to have a drink[14]. You decide to have dinner[15] together. You have a good time[16], in fact you have lots of fun[17]! Afterwards you go home, have a bath[18] and go to bed. As you close your eyes, you wonder, “How did I have time to do all this?!”
