Outlaws for In-laws

Outlaws[1] for In-laws[2]. You’re probably already familiar with the immediate and extended family. But what about those other family members not related to you by blood? Well, it’s really quite simple.

To talk about relatives[3] connected to us by marriage, we just have to add the label of “-in-law” at the end, or “step” or “half-“ at the beginning of a family member’s name, depending on the situation.  For example:

Your spouse[4]’s mother    =    your mother-in-law
Your spouse’s father          =    your father-in-law
Your spouse’s sister          =    your sister-in-law
Your spouse’s brother        =    your brother-in-law
Your daughter’s husband    =    your son-in-law
Your son’s wife                 =    your daughter-in-law

Your father’s new wife[5]                =    your stepmother
Your mother’s new husband[6]         =    your stepfather
Your new husband/wife’s daughter    =    your stepdaughter
Your new husband/wife’s son           =    your stepson
Your step-parent’s daughter            =    your stepsister
Your step-parent’s son                   =    your stepbrother

Your parent[7] and step-parent’s daughter   =  your half-sister
Your parent and step-parent’s son              =  your half-brother

Marriage sure complicates life, doesn’t it?!
