I hate ties! They're boring and uncomfortable. I'm not talking about the ties[1] that you wear around your neck! No, I'm talking about the ties[2], or draws, when the score of both football teams are the same. It's s unsatisfying! There's no winner. No loser. No drama. Teams often play to keep the score the same, and don't even try to win. They figure that a tie is a good result. I can't believe it! Where's the excitement! In baseball, they play extra innings[3] until one team wins. In basketball, they play overtime[4] after overtime until there's a winner. So I want to start my campaign to end ties in football.
Until a few years ago, there used to be ties in ice hockey too, but the National Hockey League decided to end this policy and add a little more emotion to the game. If after regulation time, and an overtime, if the score is still tied, there is a shoot-out, which is similar to penalty kicks. The winner gets three points, and the shoot-out loser gets one point. It has proven to be very popular among fans. So, what d'ya say, let's lobby[5] for shoot-outs in football now!
I think that it's fitting[6] to quote one of American Footoball's legendary coaches, Vincent Lombardi, who said: "If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?" Or even better: "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing!
Then, we we get rid of[7] ties, we can work on stopping the clock and using video replays! Okay?
