It’s summertime, and you’re sitting on the seashore staring at the horizon, contemplating the future. Are you waiting for your ship to come in? Are you waiting for good fortune to come your way? Times are tough, aren’t they? If you haven’t realized, we’re all in the same boat; we’re all experiencing the same thing. So, it’s time to make your own luck. It’s time to set sail. Time to start a new journey. Don’t miss the boat; or lose an opportunity.
On your voyage[1], it’s possible that you may rock the boat; people often get mad when you try to change the current state of affairs[2]. They may threaten you to Shape up or ship out! Which means they want you to either act the way they want you to or go away. They may even threaten to ship you off somewhere; send you to another place, like Timbuktu! They’re obviously trying to take the wind out of your sails; to discourage[3] you. But don’t give up hope and abandon what you’re doing; in other words, don’t jump ship.
To avoid a sinking ship; or a failed venture, you’d better run a tight ship; or closely control what’s going on, and trim your sails; or cut expenses. Although it might be tempting[4] to ride a wave; get involved with something that is popular and easy to do. But instead of catching the wave; or follow something fashionable, you may find greater fortune if you sail close to the wind; or take a risk[5].
If you follow this advice, you’ll sail through life; easily achieve what you want, because you’ll always ride the crest of the wave; because good fortune always accompanies success. Basically, what it all boils down[6] to is doing whatever makes you happy; or whatever floats your boat!
