ANSWERS: 1) Britain colonized Belize. 2) British Honduras was Belize’s former name. 3) Belize gained independence on September 21, 1981. 4) Guatemala had claimed Belize as part of its territory. 5) Guatemala and Mexico border Belize. 6) Belize is the only Central American country that does not have a coastline on the Pacific Ocean. 7) An approaching hurricane prompted the government to move its coastal capital of Belize City to the interior city of Belmopan in 1971.
