Where There's Smoke, There's Fire!

Bonfire Night[1] is a perfect excuse to talk about expressions using fire!

As you already know, where there’s smoke, there’s fire! In a figurative sense that means if something seems wrong, it’s because it is wrong. Sometimes, a bad situation only gets worse. We call this jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire! I guess it’s in human nature to make a situation worse, or to add fuel to the fire! So be careful not to get yourself into a risky situation. In other words, don’t play with fire, or you could get burnt[2]!

When we experience a very bad situation for the first time, we call this a baptism by fire. When we experience many bad situations in order to reach a goal, we call this going through fire and water. Perhaps, a good strategy is to fight fire with fire! Or use the same weapons as your adversary!

Occasionally, fire can be more benevolent. For example, if you light a fire under someone, you pressure or encourage them to try harder and do something better. It’s even possible to set the world on fire! This means that someone or something is very exciting or successful. And two people who become very friendly very quickly are said to get on like a house on fire! You can even get along with someone so well, that they excite you, or they light your fire!
