The Next to Last Time

If you use the before next time or last time, the meaning changes slightly.

Next time refers to the period of time right after this period of time. Ironically, The next time refers to an unspecified time in the future when something is expected to happen.

I’m going to see a horror movie next Friday.
The next Friday I see a movie, I won’t watch a horror movie.

Next Friday is the Friday after today. The next Friday could be a week away or two months away; we can’t predict exactly when it will happen.

We use last in a similar way to next. Last time refers to the period right before this period of time. The last time refers to an unspecified time in the past when something happened.

Last summer, I went to on vacation to the Canary Islands.
I went to the Canary Islands, the last summer I went on vacation,

Last summer is the summer before this summer. The last summer could be a year ago or five years ago; we don’t remember.

If you look at the examples above, next time or last time can go at the end of the sentence, or at the beginning separated by a comma. On the other hand, the next time or the last time is followed by a complete phrase, and may be in the first or second half of the sentence.

We can also use the last time to refer to a specific final period of time in the future.
Next Friday will be the last day to submit your proposals.

Well, be careful the next time you use next time! Okay?
