Frustrated Plans

Don't you just hate when plans get cancelled? For example, you happily think: I'm going to see a movie on Friday night! Unfortunately, something expected happens that ruins the plan: I was going to see a movie on Friday night but instead I had to babysit my kid sister!

This is what I call a frustrated plan. As you probably know already, we use be going to for future plansAnd the only difference between the construction of a future plan and a frustrated plan is the tense of the verb be. In a future plan, we use the present simple but in a frustrated plan, we use the past simple, either was or were, depending on the subject. For example:

was going to visit my family.
You were going to take a vacation.
He was going to work on a vacation cruise.
She was going to spend her vacation at the beach.
We were going to travel to India.
They were going to camping in the mountains.

It's really frustrating when you can't do something that you were planning to do, isn't it?
