Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia refers to a word associated to a sound. In other words, the sound of a word is its meaning. The words in bold in the sentences below are just a small sample of onomatopoeic words. I've used them as verbs, but they can be used in other parts of speech as well. Even if you don’t know what the word means, you can deduce the meaning by its sound. So read the sentences below out loud [1] and listen to their meaning!

The soda gurgled as it was poured out of the bottle.
The driver honked his horn as he went by.
The bottles rattled against each other inside the moving truck.
The barrel rumbled down the ramp.
The dead leaves rustled in the wind.
She scraped her fingernails across the window.
The car screeched to a stop.
He snapped the tree branch in half with his hands.
She was so mad, she slammed the door closed.
She kept tapping her pencil on the book.
The book fell out of my hands and thudded on the floor.
The fan blades whirled round and round
