Kiss and Tell

Kiss and tell is when someone describes their sexual encounter to other people. But you have to be careful what you say or tell. Basically, we say things but we tell people. For example:

He said that he was a good kisser.
He told me that she was a good kisser.

There are other speech words, like tell that need to be followed by people, such as beg[1], invite, order, remind[2] and warn[3]. For example:

He begged them not to call his parents.
They ordered me to stay where I was.
She invited him to come for dinner.
He reminded her to call her parents.
She warned us not to stand too close to the edge.

Besides telling people things, there are other things we tell.
We tell stories. Likewise, we tell tales[4].  And we tell jokes[5], too!
We tell the truth. But we also tell lies.
We tell the time too.

Not surprisingly, you can form a few phrasal verbs  with tell. Imagine that I break something, and then you tell on[6] me, or reveal what I did.  I tell my mom that I didn’t do it, that it was the cat’s fault[7]. But she can easily tell the truth and a lie apart[8]. Of course, then my mother gets angry, and tells me off[9].

Kiss and tell. What’s true? What’s false? All told[10], time will tell[11]!
