Reported Questions

The same rules as reported speech apply here, but there are additional things to sep in mind:

1) Since we are reporting what someone asked, in reality it isn’t a question just information and so, after the speech verb, the word order is the same as a regular sentence.

2) The auxiliary verb do disappears in reported speech. In the absence of the auxiliary verb do, the main verb reflects the person and tense.

3) If there is a question word, the question word introduces the phrase. If there is no question word, the word if introduces the phrase.

Other alternative question speech verbs are question, request, wonder, etc.

Examples:

Does she help you with your homework.”
Reported form: “He asked (me) if (3) she (1) (2) helped me with my homework.”

“Can you help me with my homework.”
Reported form: “He asked (me) if I could help him with his homework.”

Why won’t you help me with my homework.”
Reported form: “He asked (me) why (3) I wouldn’t help him with his homework.”

To be continued... reported commands.
