Independence Day isn’t just a movie, it’s the day the United States commemorates its independence from the British. Although, independence was formally declared on July 4th, 1776, the Revolutionary War started in 1774 and the U.S. didn’t become an independent country until the war ended in 1783. July 4th became a national holiday in 1870. Now it’s common for Americans to show their pride by hanging the old “stars and stripes”[1] (another name for the American flag). They play the national pastime[2] of Baseball, have barbecues with hamburgers, hotdogs and a cold beer, set off firecrackers[3] and watch fireworks[4] to the sound of patriotic songs like the Star Spangled Banner, the national anthem.
