THE Places You'll Go!

Well, as you probably know, putting the before place names is a difficult subject. Below, is a little guide to help you:

Use "the" before bodies of water (EXCEPT lakes) and rivers

The Atlantic (Ocean)                 __ Lake Ontario

The Mediterranean (Sea)            __ Loch Ness

The Nile (River)                         __ Golden Pond

Do NOT use "the" before mountains, BUT use it before mountain ranges.

Do NOT use “the” before islands, BUT use it before archipelagos.

__ Mont Blanc                          The Alps

__ Tenerife                              The Canary Islands

Do NOT use “the” before countries, EXCEPT those with "united / country / republic" in their name.

__ England                               The United Kingdom

__ Russia                                 The Soviet Union

__ China                                  The People’s Republic of China

Do NOT use "the" before continents (or their parts) either, BUT use it before hemispheres.

__ South America                      The Southern Hemisphere
