The day after Thanksgiving in the U.S. is popularly known as Black Friday. The day is the official beginning of the Christmas shopping season. How the day earned its name is debatable[1]. One theory says that the name is due to being one of the busiest shopping day of the year, since the day after Thanksgiving is also a holiday (except for those working in the stores). People go out in mass[2] to take advantage of the day off[3]. There is so much traffic on the roads and the stores are filled to capacity[4], creating such a chaotic, stressful situation that it earns a “black” label[5]. Another theory points to accounting[6]. It used to be common for financial records to be marked in red for losses[7] and in black for profits[8]. Since there is so much business on this day because of the day off, retailers[9] can’t help but end up[10] in the black, with profits.
