Although Australia was discovered in 1770 by the English explorer James Cook, Australia Day celebrates the day in 1788, January 26th, when the British captain, Arthur Philip, established a penal colony at what would eventually be known as Sydney. Like national public holidays in other countries, it is celebrated by parades[1] and fireworks[2].
