Sometimes, the reasons for something is obvious and sometimes it’s not. When we try to explain the possibilities for a situation, we make assumptions. In English, when we assume about present situations, we use the following structure:
modal verb + be
In particular, there are five modal verbs that we use to talk about current possibilities: can’t, could, may, might, must. Of course, some modal verbs have a stronger connotation than others.
impossible: can’t
possible: could / might / may
definitely: must
Look at the examples below, where we can see this structure.
Tom’s not at work today.
He can’t be sick.
Impossible, because I saw him yesterday and he was fine
He might be sick.
Possibly. I’m not sure but it seems like the most logical reason.
He must be sick.
Definitely, because he wouldn’t miss work if wasn’t sick.
Well, what do you think?!
