TOP 10 Ways to Practice English

Often, students ask me: How can I practice my English? Well, after advising my students over the years, a thought occurred to me: Why don’t I make a Top 10 list? And so now here you are:

10. Work as a human statue in the Ramblas in Barcelona or in the Puerta del Sol in Madrid and overhear the conversations of tourists as they walk by. You may even earn a few euros!

9. Work for the tourist information center in your town. And remember, service with a smile!

8. Host a foreign English-speaking student in your home. Convince them that Spanish is too hard to learn, so they'll only talk to you in English.

7. Read the lyrics sheet of that English music you’re listening to. I don't want to hear you singing any hidden Spanish messages!

6. Chat on the internet with foreigners in English. Even if they’re not native, who cares! You foreigners seem to understand each other better in English anyway.

5. With DVD technology, you can now watch movies in the original English version with subtitles! And then without subtitles!!

4. Sing English songs in a Karaoke bar!! Oooh! (That's my personal favorite!)

3. Listen to English talk radio stations on the internet. The British BBC or the American NPR are good (and even informative!). Ideal when making dinner at night.

2. Travel to an English speaking country. But beware of fellow countrymen working in restaurants – they’re dying to talk to you in Spanish.

And finally… (drum roll, please)

1. Live in an English speaking country. Nothing better than leaving your sunny country and going to England, where it rains most days of the year, or the US, where the winter is really cruel!
