Commonwealth Day

On the second Monday in March, Commonwealth Day is celebrated. This day celebrates the association of countries known as the Commonwealth of Nations. The Commonwealth refers to the United Kingdom and fifty-three other independent countries, including Australia, Belize, Canada, Jamaica, Nigeria and New Zealand, which once formed part of the British Empire. Not all former colonies, such as Ireland and the United States, form part of the Commonwealth. There are even a few countries, which were never former colonies, that form part of the Commonwealth.

The goal of this non-political organization is to encourage good political, economic and cultural relations among the member states. The headquarters are located in London, and the ceremonial Head of the Commonwealth is the Monarch of England. That doesn’t mean that Queen Elizabeth II is the head of the member states. Although, she is actually recognized as the Head of 16 member states, including Australia, Canada, Jamaica and New Zealand, which form the Commonwealth Realm. The most popular display of the Commonwealth is the Commonwealth Games, which are a smaller version of the Olympics. They are also held every four years. This year, they will be held during the first two weeks of October in Delhi, India.
