What's so great about Great Britain? Well, the Isle of Great Britain (which includes the nations of England, Scotland and Wales) is the largest island in Europe. Not too bad! And it's also the eighth largest island in the world. Not bad either! Great Britain was originally called Greater Britain[1] as opposed to Lesser Britain[2], which referred to Brittany, a region on the northern coast of France. So what's the difference between Great Britain and the United Kingdom? The UK is officially called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. So there are your answers!
